At lunch, Percy and Nancy get into a fight where Percy pushes Nancy into a fountain after she provokes Grover. Mrs Dodds is very angry and takes Percy into the museum to be scolded.
When they are in the museum, Mrs Dodds claims Percy has stolen something,. She then transforms into a fury after Percy continues to be confused. Mr Brunner enters, giving Percy a pen which transports into a sword. Percy then kills her. When he comes back out, everyone has forgotten#160; about Mrs Dodds existence.
Percy overhears Grover and Mr Brunner talking about the incident with Mrs Dodds. They remember her, unlike the rest of the school. They are worried that Percy is in danger.
On the bus back home from boarding school, Percy and Grover get off after the bus breaks down next to a fruit stand. Percy sees three old women knitting socks, one holding the yarn. They look at Percy, and Percy jokes about it, unlike Grover who is terrified. The woman in the middle then cuts the yarn, a symbol of death.
Percy arrives in Manhattan to his apartment. His stepfather Gabe Ugliano is there gambling with his friends. Percy goes to see his mother, Sally Jackson who he hasn't seen since Christmas. Sally says they are going to their beach house in Montauk.
