Did you hear about the French?
What do you mean?
The British settlers and the Natives that inhabited the South East part of the US had been living in semi-peace for as long as they had been settling there. They traded when they needed to and were just kind of neutral with each other. But when some French Fur Traders came to the land in around 1760, it began to create some problems between them.

I solemnly swear to protect the Cherokee.
I solemnly swear to be loyal to the British and not the French.
When the French arrived the British began to worry about the Cherokee allying or siding with the French. Because of this they convinced the Cherokee to sign a treaty. The treaty made sure that the Cherokee didn't trade with French and it made sure that they would always side with the British.

Wow this is great! We now have allies!
After the treaty was signed, the Natives were very happy and excited to have allies. Even though it prevented them from interacting with the French they also got many things in return or so they thought. They were promised peace between them and protection from the British when the French and their Indian allies attacked.
