I'm having my first IEP meeting today and I'm kind of nervous about doing something wrong. Could you guys give me some tips on what not to do during my meeting?
Sure thing!
Of course!
Firstly, never pre-write or complete an IEP before the meeting to save time. IEP meetings should always take time to discuss with the parents and to analyze the progress and goals of each individual student.
Secondly, never begin an IEP discussion by placing the student in restrictive settings first and then considering placing them in general education. Always begin by providing the least restrictive environment for the students that allows them to have inclusion in their classroom.
Thirdly, never hold an IEP meeting without the presence of all the required members of the meeting as mandated by IDEA. Having all required members of an IEP meeting assures that the student will get all the resources they require for their disabilities.
Fourthly, do not use the same IEP strategies for a student continuously. Always try to look for new research-based strategies that can help the student if the other strategies did not show improvement.
Fifthly, do not blame the parents of a student or assume that the student’s lack of improvement stems from their home environment. This can cause the parents to feel targeted and will make communication between them and their student’s teachers difficult.
Sixthly, do not reject educating students because you feel like their disabilities are too severe for you to appropriately serve. Services must be provided for each student with disability as well as having the right to have free and appropriate education.
Wow! Thanks for your advice, guys! I'm feeling a lot more confident now!
You're welcome!
Good luck!
