- chapter 8
- chapter 9
- salva's friend died, was killed, was eaten by a lion. it makes Salva sad.
- chapter 10
- Salva and the group cross the Nile to get to the akobo desert and after that, they will soon be at the refugee camp.
- chapter 11
- Salva and the group walk through the desert. while walking Salva loses hope because of a long day but his uncle helps him through it.
- chapter 12
- while still in the dessert Salva learns that after they reach the refugee camp, his uncle will leave him to go fight in the war.
- salva's uncle is killed and so the group stays there for a day while dealing with the fact that their leader is now dead
- Salva sees a woman in the crowd that he thinks is his mother but is forced to admit that his family is most likely dead.
