  • We start with the Abert's squirrel population. All members of this population are relatively the same color, with tasseled ears and forelimbs. Some variation appears in their fur color, which are different shades of brown and black, with grey-white tails. Due to the abundance of trees, Abert's squirrels make nests and feed on the seeds and fungus in the Ponderosa pines.
  • The gradual erosion of the land through the flowing of the Colorado River causes a separation, resulting in two groups of squirrels living on separate rims (North and South) of what is to be called the Grand Canyon. The North Rim resides at a higher elevation, whereas the South Rim sits lower.

  • Finally, after a long period of time, the two populations of squirrels meet. However, the two populations are unable to interbreed and produce healthy, fertile offspring. Thus, due to the reproductive mechanism barriers that cause this, we now have two new species that exhibit their own unique traits and stem from one common ancestor. The Kaibab navigates their dry, sandy biome on foot, whereas the Abert's squirrel leaps from pine to pine.
