Storyboard Text

  • I was born near Yuma, Arizona, on March 31, 1927. My family and I work on a farm but, unfortunately at the age of ten, my family had to sell the farm thanks to The Great Depression.
  • After my family had sold the farm we had to move to California to become migrant workers. I had still gone to school until we decided after graduating the 8th grade that, I should leave it to become a full time farmer.
  • When I was old enough i fought in the U.S. Navy during 1944-1946. When I got back to my home I married Helen Fabela. I also joined the Community Service Organization (CSO) and I formed the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA)
  • In 1964 I started El Malcriado: The Voice of the Farm Worker, the official newspaper of the NFWA. Then in 1966 I led a 250-mile march from Delano to Sacramento, California to let the public and law-makers know about the mistreatment of farm workers.
  • I started my first hunger strike, it lasted for 25 days in February and March it was done to stop violence against strikers. After that a nationwide boycott of California grape began. Then I was jailed for defying a court order against boycotting.
  • I led a 1,000 mile march through the Central Valley of California, in order to call attention to the union elections. I announce that all general lettuce and grape boycotts ended in 1978. I then announce a new grape boycott, due to the excessive use of pesticides. I then led a 1,000-person march calling for improvement in working conditions. Then I unfortunately died during a fast.
