Storyboard Text

  • Nicks First sign of being an unreliable narrator...
  • Nick gets from on place to another without knowing...
  • Nick contradicts himself...
  • In chapter one the readers see a glimpse of how Nick might be an unreliable narrator. Nick states that he is "inclined to reserve all judgements" (Fitzgerald 1). He contradicts himself, after hearing about Toms affairs, saying that "Daisy should rush out of the house, child in arms" (Fitzgerald 20). The authors purpose for this quote was to bring to the readers attention that even though Nick might say one thing about himself, but it is not always true.
  • After Nick goes to Tom's secret apartment he does not remember how he got on the train. One minute he was "standing beside his bed... (and) then (he) was lying half-asleep in the lower level of the Pennsylvania Station" (Fitzgerald 28). The author wants the readers to see how the consumption of alcohol can lead to fuzziness of events and therefore making the narrator not trustworthy.
  • At the beginning of the book Nick admires Gatsby highly. In chapter nine he contradicts himself by saying the he "disapproved of (Gatsby) from beginning to end" (Fitzgerald 154). One of the characteristic of being a reliable narrator is not to judge someone before knowing them. Here Nick says from the very begging he disapproved of him, showing that he is already has his opinion on Gatsby before getting to know him.
