Ponyboy and Johnny get back to the church from having lunch with Dally and find that it's on fire. The boys were told that there were children inside. They then run in to save them.
The boys ran into the church and found the children. They run up to get the children. They successfully get all of the children out, but when Ponyboy and Johnny get out of the church themselves Dally hits ponyboy to help him breath and knocks him out.
It'll be okay Johnny, you'll be okay.
An ambulance comes to pick up the boys and take them to a hospital.
Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold.
No, Johnny please.
The ambulance took Johnny and Ponyboy to the hospital, Pony didn't have to stay overnight or anything but Johnny stayed in the hospital for quite a few days.
Ponyboy wanted to check on Johnny, He knew he wasn't doing well, but he had to see him again. Dally was with him. Johnny was the most important thing to dally. Ponyboy couldn't accept the fact that Johnny was dying.
Johnny died in the hospital at age 16 Dally ran out of the hospital and eventually got shot by a police officer because he wanted to die. Johnny's last words were, "Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold."
