- I'm simply defending a negro- his name's Tom Robinson.
- My folks said your daddy was a disgrace an' that nigger oughtta hang from the water tank!
- Francis called Atticus somethin', an' I wasn't about to take it off him. 
- The first part of showing courage was Atticus, standing up for Tom his kids, and other people. In this scene, Atticus explained the case to Scout and why some people don't agree with it. 
- Mr. FInch, I got down offa that chair an' turned around an' she sorta jumped on me 
- It was also a very hard situation for Scout. She had to try hard to not fight to defend her dad. I can't imagine how hard that might be for a girl like her in a time like this. Her efforts showed a lot of courage.
- Tom is dead.
- Scout really struggled with holding down her anger. In this scene, she was explaining to Uncle Jack why she reacted like that towards Francis. It's understandable and the journey through this tough time taught Scout courage. 
- Lastly, the trial took so much courage out of Tom and Atticus. For Tom to testify when they both know the most common outcome. 
- This scene of Atticus revealing Tom's death to Scout, Aunt Alexandra, Miss Maudie, and Calpurnia is a great example of Tom being the mockingbird. Earlier, Atticus told Scout it was a sin to kill a mockingbird because they hurt no one. Tom was a mockingbird as well.
- To me, this is a perfect scene to portray Boo Radley. It shows that he is nothing but a good person and he was misunderstood. The same way that a mockingbird is. He caused no harm.
