- Kim Il-Sung, leader of North Korea in 1950, on January 17th proposed the “liberation” of South Korea to Soviet officials. By early spring Kim had gained support for the invasion from the Soviet premier and Chinese leader.

- Mark W. Clark, Peng Dehuai, and Kim Il-Sung conclude a truce, a demilitarized zone is created, and South Korean President Syngman Rhee announces his acceptance of the agreement despite no South Korean representative ever signing the document
