  • Impact of the Railroad
  • Mining
  • I finally arrived after such a long trip. I even get some new machinery!! So much faster than before.
  • Homesteading/Ranching
  • Look at all this FREE land I got just for moving here . Such a great deal!!
  • Boomtowns/Mining
  • Ughhh. took you long enough. Now hurry we have to leave now in order to go and mine.
  • Im so happy I was finally able to find 3 pieces of gold!!
  • 10 years later
  • We should leave now if we even want to be able to find any coal.
  • Food
  • Railroads first helped helped people in 1869. They connected New Mexico to other parts in the country, the people could travel longer distances, People could now trade goods easier, and They could trade mining equipment or machinery. All of this made their life's easier. In my picture, you can see how people transported goods and machinery by train. It also shows how it was much more efficient for people to travel that way.
  • Harvey Houses
  • Hello sir, what can I get you to eat today?
  • The homestead act of 1862 allowed any individual to get 160 acres of land for free if they agreed to move to the Western US. If they improved the land in some way such as farming or any building, in 5 years, they were allowed to keep the land. In my picture, you can she how the man has now created and area so that crops can grow and even has a barn.
  • Tourism
  • A boomtown is a town that quickly rises up in population due to and industry such as mining. These boomtowns attracted people from all over the world. The people there mined gold, silver, coal, and other minerals. When all the materials ran out, the boomtowns would then become ghost towns. In my picture, you can see how a boomtown filled with people excited to mine, later becomes a ghost town.
  • Wild West
  • DID YOU NOT HEAR ME SAY TO GET OF MY LAND. NOBODY IS ALLOWED HERE!YOU BETTER PREPARE TO DIE.
  • Harvey houses were restaurants/hotels that were located along the railroad line. They provided good food at an affordable price. Since men were dirty, unreliable, and rude, Harvey houses only hired women. These women were later given the name of "Harvey Girls." These Harvey girls lived in the upstairs of the Harvey houses and had strict rules. These rules included not wearing makeup, chewing gum, or talk to each other. In my picture you can see a man ordering food while one of the Harvey girls takes his order and the other sweeps.
  • Ahh, such a long train ride I had just now. Thank goodness for Harvey Houses. Am I right?
  • Tourism attracted many people all over the world. These people were brought in by the trains on the railroad. The people that went to visit loved souvenirs like Indian pottery and rugs. These people also liked learning about the southwest culture. Some of the people also stole the items and insulted Southwest culture. In my picture you can see how many people from all over the world came over to see the southwest culture. Some of the people appreciated it while other insulted it.
  • So delighted I took the train to come and visit.
  • Look, that pot is absolutely beautiful!!
  • Uhh that pot looks disgusting.....but I could steel it and sell it.
  • Lawlessness became common because of few lawmen, which made New Mexico a great place for the outlaws to hide. The corruption grew in the Wild West because of "Santa Fe Ring". In the Wild West everybody carried guns, which they used to solve any problems. The land grants later created disputes. In my picture you can see a person getting mad at an other person because they were on their land.
  • I-I-I'm sorry. I d-d-didn't know. Please let me l-live.
