  • Daisy's abstinence is important to acknowledge because it ties into the themes of alcoholism throughout the story and alcohol's connection to the different classes. For old money, alcohol is a way to escape reality and let loose from the constant pressure put on them to uphold their familial and generational values. For new money, distributing alcohol is a way to display wealth to others, but people with new money must remain sober in order to uphold a demeanor of class and wealth so that they can blend seamlessly into an old money environment. Because Daisy is sober among heavy-drinking old money people, she is safe from slipping up and revealing details about her poor upbringing, shielding her from rumors and helping her to maintain her facade of wealth and class.

  • This scene is explained by Jordan Baker to Nick Carraway, as she describes the type of people Daisy would surround herself with back in Chicago. Jordan remarks that Daisy and her husband, Tom Buchanan, "moved with a fast crowd, all of them young and rich and wild, but she came out with an absolutely perfect reputation" (77). Jordan explains that it is "Perhaps because she doesn't drink" and that "It's a great advantage not to drink among hard-drinking people. You can hold your tongue, and moreover, you can time any little irregularity of your own so that everyone else is so blind that they don't see or care" (77). This scene and idea brings up the theme of alcoholism, and the significance of new money people refusing to partake in any drinking in order to keep their social status and maintain a facade of wealth.
