- President George H. W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act. It was signed July 26th 1990 in a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House. George H.W. Bush remarked this in his speech he gave the day he signed the bill into law “With today's signing of the landmark Americans for Disabilities Act, every man, woman, and child with a disability can now pass through once-closed doors into a bright new era of equality, independence, and freedom.”. Although years before in 1988 Bush opposed accessible transit but with this landmark legislation it would create accessible transit. He does not speak about his change in his remarks on that day but it was his decision to sign the ADA that created a more accessible America for everyone.

- My opinion on this bill becoming a law is that it is essential to my functioning in society. I am disabled so I am incredibly lucky to be born after the fight for this law. It is important to me that there is legal support for my community. So yes I would have voted in favor for this bill.

- In Olmstead v. L.C. (1999), the Supreme Court held that unnecessarily isolating people with disabilities in institutions is discrimination under Title II of the ADA The Court said states must place individuals in the “most integrated setting appropriate” when their treatment providers find community care suitable, the person does not oppose it, and it can be reasonably accommodated given state resources.The decision rests on two judgments: institutionalization stigmatizes people as incapable, and it severely restricts their social, economic, and personal lives. While states can argue that shifting to community-based care would “fundamentally alter” their programs, they must show a realistic plan and reasonable waiting lists.
