In the beginning of the story, Ralph is irresponsible and makes fun of Piggy when Piggy trusts him not to laugh at his name. Ralph tries to constantly walk away from Piggy and is more interested in being independent without any parents or rules.
Later in the story, Ralph and Piggy end up assembling the boys together and Ralph becomes chief. As he feels responsibility he creates his own rules and plans to survive and to potentially get off the island with a signal fire. Ralph starts this democracy to have the boys work together and uses a conch shell to assemble the boys and let each other know when they can speak. Ralph develops this sense of leadership, confidence, and responsibility as chief.
Eventually, Ralph's democracy is torn apart by Jack and he takes all the boys to his own side of the island in which they prioritize hunting. One night the boys were having a fire and Simon, who came from where the beast was, is running down the mountain to tell the boys they are safe. Before Simon gets this information off the boys beat him to death, including Ralph and Piggy, showing the savage side to all of the boys
