- How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife was written by an Ilocano author who won the first prize in the Commonwealth Literary Contest in 1940 named Manuel E. Arguilla.
- How My Brother Leon Brought Home His Wife
- INTRODUCTION
- The story started with the narration of Baldo, characterizing Maria by describing her physical features, and by stating how in love his brother Leon is towards Maria. Thereafter, the journey home with Labang started.
- EXPOSITION
- You love Nagrebcan, don't you, Noel?
- There is Nagrebcan, Maria.
- Who told you to drive through the fields tonight?
- Father, he told me to follow the Waig tonight.
- During the journey home, Baldo took the Waig road instead of passing Camino Real which complicated things. Baldo, who acted upon their father's request, tried testing Maria's character with how the way she handles the situation on hand.
- COMPLICATION
- Father...where is he?
- As soon as they got home, they were greeted by their mother who was standing by the doorway. Leon then asked for the whereabouts of their father, in which their mother replied in all seriousness that his father is in his room upstairs, bothered by his injured leg.
- He is in his room upstairs. His leg is bothering him again.
- CLIMAX
- Was she afraid of Labang?
- Baldo was called by his father and asked how Maria has been. He answered positively, making Maria surpass the trials set by his father in proving that she's worth to be Leon's wife. The conflict was resolved.
- DENOUEMENT
- She is very beautiful, father.
- No, Father, she was not afraid.
- During Baldo and his father's conversation, they suddenly felt the presence of Leon and Maria nearing the room. This caused Baldo and his father to change their topic. Upon exiting their father's room , Baldo reminisced Maria's scent, like a morning when papayas are in bloom.
- RESOLUTION
- She smells like papayas in bloom in a morning.
