Storyboard Text

  • Ted, I'm wondering what is a force?
  • Well, Bob, a force is a push or pull acted upon an object. See, right now I am pushing the block, so a force is acting upon it. The block has potential energy, or the energy an object has due to its position, condition, or chemical composition, as I'm starting to push, but kinetic energy, or the energy an object has due to its motion, as the block moves.
  • 15N
  • What's happening here, Ted?
  • Right now, there are two forces acting upon the block. Because you are stronger than me, our forces are unbalanced, and the block will move in the direction of your force.

  • If we had equal strength, like here, then the forces would be equal and the block wouldn't move.
  • 10N
  • Since we are now both pushing the block in the same direction, you add the two forces together to get the net force. Here, the total net force is 25N.

  • Friction is the resistance of motion on an object. If I push the eraser across the yoga mat, friction will slow it down using resistance between the two objects.
  • Ted, what about friction?
  • Friction
  • To summarize, forces affect motion in many ways. First, potential energy is the energy that an object has at the beginning of its motion, while kinetic energy is the energy an object has due to its motion. Second, balanced forces do not cause the object to move, because the forces are equal, while unbalanced forces due. Finally, friction can slow down the motion of the object because of its resistance. This shows that forces can change an object's motion.
  • Wow, Ted! You sure know a lot about forces and motion! Thanks for teaching me!
  • No problem, Bob! Now you know all about forces and motion!
