  • Tommy got his ball stuck in a tree. In order to get it down, he has to find a ladder to climb to get the ball. Tommy wants to find out at what angle he has to place the ladder to get the ball, if the tree is 24ft tall and he is 12 ft away. Using trig, he finds the equation tan-1 =(24 / 12). When he solves it, he finds that the angle is 63.4o.

  • Tommy now needs to find how long of a ladder he needs to get the ball back. Since the tree is 24 ft tall and the angle he found is 63.4o , using trig he came up with the equation sin(63.4) = 24 / x. After isolating x, his new equation is x = 24 / sin(63.4). Tommy finds that the ladder needs to be 26.8ft long.

  • He manages to get a ladder, and places it exactly in place. Tommy is able to carefully climb the ladder, and get the ball. He throws the ball down, so he can go and get it. But then he spots another kid coming towards him.
  • A kid named Andy spots Tommy's ball, and wants to go play with it. However, he has to make sure that he gets the ball before Tommy does, so he has to find who's closer to the ball. Given that the tree is 24 ft tall and his angle of elevation is 60o, Andy uses trig to come up with the equation tan(60) = 24 / x. He rewrites it as x = 24 / tan(60). He solves the equation and finds that he is 13.9ft away from the tree.

  • Because Andy was further away from the ball, Tommy got the ball first. However, since Tommy was a nice guy, he decided to share his ball with Andy, and they became new friends!
