- Hi, I am HM, i have no hippocampus and i have terrible memory. Or do I?
- Hi Im Milner, today I will be studying the biological reason for anterograde amnesia in HM
- I will be using the following triangulation techniques:- interviews with HM and his family members - conversations with HM regarding his behaviour - cognitive testing, including memory recall tests and learning activities (reverse mirror painting) - MRI to establish the amount of brain damage
- HM was unable to pick up fresh episodic information (memory of events) or fresh semantic knowledge (general knowledge about the world). This implies that the parts of his brain that were destroyed are crucial for long-term explicit memory. As evidenced by his ability to carry on a typical conversation, HM has a working memory capacity.
- Strentgh include the ability to investigate circumstances that would otherwise be unfeasible or unethical, as well as providing thorough (rich qualitative) information and insight for future study. Superior ecological validity
- Limitations include the inability to extrapolate findings to the entire population.prejudice among researchers; difficulty in replication (but other studies, like that of Clive Wearing, display the same results). T ime-consuming and mostly moral
