- These quotes show how the KKK would grip these families of color and terrorize communities with hate causing fear.
- These quotes represent how heavy of a presence the KKK is. It points to the fear that just the name of the Klan strikes and how many black families were affected through their communities.
- "Nine robed figures dressed all in white. Heads covered with sofly pointed hoods. Against the black of night,a single wooden cross blazed" (Draper 1).
- "Two children, crouched behind the low-hanging branches of a hulking tree" (Draper 1).
- "Who are they? Jojo whispered, stealing another glance. . . The Klan. Just saying those words made Stella's lips quiver" (Draper 2).
- "The family sat huddled around the only table in the house. . . Stell loved the feel of the table"(Draper 4).
- These quotes help represent the fear that the Klan strikes into families of color. So many families, so many members destroyed by white supremacy and control.
- "It was a sewing table for her mother, a place to clean fish for her father, a batteground for many games of checkers" (Draper 4).
- "Red fire. Black cross. White hoods. They're here. Now" (Draper 5).
- "I'm gonna run in the Olympics one day, [Tony} declared" (Draper 14).
- This quote shows the immediate disadvantage kids of color had in the early time of US history. Kids like Tony would struggle to accomplish their dreams just because of their skin color.
- "We don't even have a track team at our school. . . Yeah, but the white school does" (Draper 14).
- "You think if you went to that school, they'd let you run on their team?. . . Tony stepped down. Probably not" (Draper 14).
- "Stella felt the tension in her mother's arms. and she knew that in reality, fear hugged them both" (Draper 23).
- "Her pillow was a pancake flat. . .She gazed at the newspaper-covered wall next to her bed" (Draper 22).
