The Treaty of Paris ends the French and Indian War. France surrendered its land in North American east of the Mississippi to Britain. This ends a problem for the British colonists along the Atlantic Coast. The costs of the war lead the British government to implement new taxes on the colonists.

Britain passes the Stamp Act, imposing a tax on legal documents, newspapers, and playing cards. This is the first direct tax on the American colonists and is greatly resisted. A successful American campaign to have the act repealed then took place.

The first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in Massachusetts at Concord and Lexington . The news spread across the eastern seaboard, and thousands of volunteers known as "Minute Men" gathered at Cambridge, Massachusetts.In the first major action of the war, the colonial soldiers held off the British for more than two hours at Breed's Hill. Eventually forced to abandon their position, including Bunker Hill, which was overlooking Boston on June 17, 1775.
The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
