The National Party passed 317 laws to legalize racism toward anyone who was not white. Thus began the South African system of racial segregation, known as 'apartheid', which in the Afrikaans language means 'separation'.
Many countries turned their backs on South Africa because of its racist laws. The United Nations called for the end of apartheid, economic agreements with South Africa were blocked and its participation in the Olympic Games was vetoed as measures to pressure the Afrikaner government.
