  • The National Party passed 317 laws to legalize racism toward anyone who was not white. Thus began the South African system of racial segregation, known as 'apartheid', which in the Afrikaans language means 'separation'.
  • Many countries turned their backs on South Africa because of its racist laws. The United Nations called for the end of apartheid, economic agreements with South Africa were blocked and its participation in the Olympic Games was vetoed as measures to pressure the Afrikaner government.

  • Thanks to international pressure and negotiations between the South African president and the ANC, the government released Mandela in 1990 and abolished apartheid in 1991. As president, Mandela moderated his speech and opted for dialogue and understanding, which He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

  • Nelson Mandela's party, the African National Congress (ANC), organized numerous marches and civil disobedience actions. At first, Mandela supported peaceful resistance, but later he supported the violent actions of some sectors of the party. For that reason he was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment.
