- Timmy had to go to the hospital.
- He was checked by a doctor.
- Hey Timmy! According to the results of the tests, you are Lactose Intolerant! You can't drink milk!
- Timmy was confused.
- But, doctor, what does that mean?
- This means, Timmy, that your body can't digest milk, so if you drink it you will get sick!
- Timmy was still confused.
- Huh?
- But, doctor, why does this happen to ME?
- Yes, Lactose Tolerance is a random mutation used by our ancestors to survive on the ancient world! When the conditions were very bad, and food was scarce, those who could drink milk survived over who those who couldn't and got sick, just like you!
- Oh, Timmy; this happens to you because your DNA didn't acquired the Lactose Tolerance mutation
- But, doctor, how is possible that there are people that are lactose tolerant and people who are lactose intolerant?
- Timmy was beginning to understand.
- Well, my friend, the percentage of people that acquired the lactose tolerance mutation is of 5%, remember that mutations happen randomly; This mutation is present on the civilizations that passed through famines, mostly in Europe and Africa and the continents colonized by them, like the Americas
- So, the amount of people with the mutation was gradually increasing by generations, since in the ancient world the ones that didn't had the mutation were most likely to die, and the ones with the mutation to survive.
- Timmy now understood!
- So I get sick if I drink milk because I am lactose intolerant, caused because I don't have the lactose tolerant mutation! Right?
- Wow! Thanks doctor.
- Now I understand!
