Clerc was in England to give a lecture when he met Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. Gallaudet was invited to attend classes at the same school Clerc taught.

Gallaudet asked Clerc to come back to America with him. And Clerc agreed, so they can back and learned and grew together.

Gallaudet and Clerc took a boat voyage on June 18, 1816, for 52 days. During the time Gallaudet taught Clerc written English and Clerc taught Gallaudet French Sign Language.
