In a school with lesson plans targeted with narrow values create barriers for students with different modes of learning. For example, in an elementary school setting, lesson plans have been curated to lead students to the same goal with a single-minded directions for every student.
We see that typically, a teacher will assign a writing assessment or some variation to determine where the students lie in the subject. With this method there is little opportunity for students to express themselves and how knowledgeable they really are.
Write a 5 paragraph book report.
This singles out all other modes of educating and excludes the students who aren't able to perform well under this environment. With no representation or freedom of expression, there's a failure in giving the best education to the students.
As a future teacher, I would like to give students the best options when it comes to their learning. Implementing methods from Universal Design for Learning will aid in my efforts by giving the students creative freedom and autonomy within the classroom. The opportunity for them to be fully engaged in their learning process will grow exponentially and as a teacher that will be the greatest achievement.
The setting in the classroom changes when there are choices within a certain assignment. The flexibility and opportunity given to the students creates a safer and more engaging environment. Offering the students a choice in which media they'd like to pursue in an assignment encourages them to complete it since they were given a choice. This develops a student center approach which is a part of the principle of UDL I would like to practice in my classroom.
