- CAUSES
- A long time ago, Cuba really wanted to be independent because they were tired of other countries controlling them. The U.S. was super interested in Cuba because of all the sugar there. Some newspapers made things sound worse than they were, which is called yellow journalism. Then, the USS Maine exploded, and people got really worried. The U.S. also wanted to be a big deal and have more land, plus they wanted to help Cuba. There were letters that made the president, McKinley, feel a lot of pressure. It was all about wanting places for naval bases and thinking about how it would affect the world. So, it was a mix of wanting to be nice, being a little selfish, and having big plans!

- A long time ago, there were a lot of big changes in America! First, the Spanish Empire ended, and the U.S. started to become a super important country in the world. Cuba became free, and then there was a war about the Philippines, which was kind of like two friends arguing. There was this thing called the Platt Amendment that helped America have a say in Cuba's business. Hawaii got added to the U.S., too, which is super cool because of all the good food and beaches! The U.S. Navy got stronger, and there was something called the Open Door Policy, which meant that everyone could trade without fighting. People really liked President Theodore Roosevelt because he had big ideas, but not everyone agreed, and there were lots of discussions about it. The Army also wanted to get better at what they do. It was a busy and exciting time!
