  • In his story "Harrison Bergeron," Kurt Vonnegut brings to light the reality of social and physical equality, or an extreme Egalitarian society. Americans are fully equal in the sense of physical looks, ability and smarts. Vonnegut uses the characters George and Harrison as examples of what happens when one is smarter than another, and the punishment they are subject to. Additionally, Vonnegut shows the negative consequences of total equality. While Americans are equal under law, it would be bad if Americans were totally equal. He indirectly makes the point that humans should not be the same, and that differences are beneficial to the growth and advancement of society. Each human is mean to have different strengths and weaknesses, as that is what makes society stronger.
