  • when Jemison got accepted into NASA she trained with NASA and worked on projects with the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory. In 1989 she recieved her first mission and was selected to join the STS-47 crew as a crew Specialist. in 1992, Jemison ans six other astornauts were sent to space and on this journey Jemison became the first African American woman to travel to space.

  • today we will learn about an amazing African American woman in Stem, Mae C Jemison!
  • Mae Carol Jemison was a doctor, engineer, and NASA astronaut! she became the first African American woman to travel in space. She has also written books, been to television shows and has been inducted in the National Women's Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame.
  • Family 
  • Mae Jemison was born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama as the youngest of three kids. A few years after being born her family moved to Chicago, Illinois. From a young age she knew that she wanted to study in the science field her mother was an elementary school teacher and her father was a maintenance supervisor.
  • Education 
  • when Jemison was 16 she graduated from Morgan Park High School, she would then go on to attend Stanford University in California. She was one of the only Black students in her class and because of this she experienced a lot of racial discrimination. She graduated from Stanford with a Bachelor degree of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts degree in African and African American studies. After this she would attend Cornell Medical school and graduated with a Doctorate in Medicine. 
  • Impact
  • after 6 years with NASA, Jemison left and started The Jemison Group which was a group that focused on promoting science, technology and social change. She started to teach environmental studies at Dartmouth College and directed the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing countries. Jemison's accomplishments have been an inspiration for many young people who want to persue their dreams and work at NASA.
  • Fun facts 
  • Jemison grew up watching the show Apollo airings and noticed that there were no female astronauts so she was inspired by African American actress Nichelle Nicholson and put her mind to traveling to space one day. jemison served as president for the Black Student Union and choreographed a performing arts production called Out of the Shadows about the a=African American experience.
