Differentiated instruction varies based on student’s interests, preferences, strengths, and struggles.
Instead of teaching the class one way differentiation allow students to learn in many different ways and have different skills.

Adaptations are changes in the way instructions or assessments are done.
Adaptations do not change what a student is expected to learn but instead changes how the teacher presents the information to the class, or how the individual student is tested. Adaptions are sometimes grouped with accommodations.
Skluzavka: 8
Accommodations are adjustments made in school settings to help students with disabilities learn just like their peers. They do not change what a student learns but simply how they learn it. There are over 500 accommodations that a student can have to succeed in their education.
This student needs instructions spoken aloud due to reading difficulties.
This student has dysgraphia and can verbally explain his assignments as an adaptation.
This student is blind and can have a designated reader as an adaptation for testing.

Modifications to change what a child is expected to learn. This means there is a change to the curriculum, tools, materials, or technology a student is expected to use.
Modifications are used in both special education classes and mainstream classes. This allows students to stay in their age grade but adjust their learning outcomes to their level.

Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) are what we use as teachers to make custom made plans for each individual student.
We can think of as SDI as a way to ensure equitable access to learning opportunities for all students. An essential aspect of an SDI is that it is not stagnate but instead requires the teacher to respond to the changing need of the classroom.

The class is working on an 800 word essay for class, let's see the SDI for each student.
This student has in her IEP an accommodation of using a speech to text program to write her paper for her dysgraphia and dyslexia.
This student has autism and in his IEP, he gets modified assignments. He only has to write 500 words.
This student gets movement breaks for her ADHD and uses her adaptation, so she is able to focus on her essay.

Remember that Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) are used for the examples and understanding of each student's individual needs. Check out the resource box for each term for articles about these terms and evidence for their necessity in schools. Understanding different disabilities is the key to using EBP to create your SDIs.
