Kenna was sent to prison for five years because she was guilty of killing her husband, Scotty. Kenna plans to head back to her hometown in hopes of meeting her daughter. Her daughter, Diem, was taken away from her right after birth.

"I don't want to answer his questions. I have no honest answers. I move a little closer to his mouth "Who are you"( Hoover 28).
"Ledger," he says right before he rips open my past, pulls out what's left of my heart, drops it on the floor, and then kisses me (Hoover 29).
Kenna heads to a local bar in her hometown to decompress. Her waiter, Ledger, is Scotty's best friend. When they meet, they slowly fall in love.

"I've given the last five years if my life to you guys. All I'm asking for in return is 20 minutes. It probably won't even take you hat long to read the letter."
Ledger brings one of the letters Kenna wrote to Scotty about the night he passed away. Ledger demands that Scotty's parents read it, so they can reconsider what kind of girl Kenna is.
