- Data compression is the process of encoding data so that it needs fewer bytes.
- Compression is useful because it helps reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space or transmission bandwidth over the internet.
- However not all data files can be compressed using Lossless compression.Lossless compression schemes are reversible so that the original data can be reconstructed.
- Lossless compression can compress data files without losing any of the information.
- ADVANTAGE:Can produce smaller data files.DISADVANTAGE:No good if 100% accuracy required e.g. text files

- Lossy compression is an example of this is when you try and save a file. When compressing data into required sizes, a lot of data is lost and it becomes irreversible. this could lead to quality or speed of the file.
