- New Orleans, 2005
- In the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina
- Hi, I'm Kathy and I'm from New Orleans. Everything I own was destroyed and I'm here in the superdome hoping someone will take me in to get me on my feet. My husbands died in the storm and I am all alone . I have lived in poverty almost my whole life and leaving here could help me start a new life. I am hungry and haven't eaten in a few days.
- A week after living in the Superdome
- I am being relocated to a wealthy family in Los Angeles. Although am being forced to leave because of the hurricane I have a chance to restart my life in a better way! Hurricane shelters have housed 273000 people and I am one of the lucky chosen to relocate. 40% have not been able to re-locate but I am grateful that I can. Climate displacement can be challenging, especially for those in poverty, but I think with the help of others i can make it. So far our population has fallen from 424674 to 230172.
- The wealthy family in Los Angeles is very kind to let me live here. However, they expect me to find a job and move out quickly. People here seem to overlook the extremely harsh conditions New Orleans is in. I am worried I will have problems find a job with my missing documents that were lost in the storm. Without them, I lack identification and people may not hire me because of it. Tomorrow I have my first interview and I will see how it goes.
- After the interview
- Luckily, Since the hurricane LA is experience a large job jump leaving many opportunities for jobs. At Long Beach there has been 64500 newly added jobs in the area. Although I don't have my documents right now, the employer is willing to let me have the job as soon as I can get my documents. It should be soon and the family I'm staying with has helped me and I will get them in a matter of days. I am grateful for the support from everyone. In LA people are being very empathetic
- After months of hard work I finally got my own apartment. It may not be big but it's home. It was really hard starting from nothing and I still have trouble getting enough money, but I'm doing much better than I was. Some people were kind and supportive, but others did not a lot of sympathy for us because how many of us came.
