- Tom Walker and his wife lived in a forlorn-looking house in Boston, Massachusetts. The wife was a termagant woman and they were miserly people who even conspired to cheat each other.
- Rising Action
- One day Tom comes across the devil in the woods and he offers Tom Kidd the pirates treasure but only under certain conditions. Unsure Tom decided to discuss the matter with his wife who urged him to accept the offer. Tom refused because he didn't want his wife to have access to the wealth that would come from the treasure.
- Climax
- "Tom, you're come for"
- The wife decides to attempt to make a deal with the devil herself. She goes to the woods and takes the houses few valuable items. She never returns home and Tom goes out to look for the valuables but come across the devil instead. Feeling gratitude ute towards him Tom decided to accept his offer. Tom was to become a usurer and open a brokers shop.
- Falling Action
- Tom found great success as a usurer but as he grew older he grew thoughtful. The grew to regret the deal he made with the devil and turned to God. Tom awaited the day the devil would come back to collect his due.
- One day as Tom was working he said "The Devil take me if I have made a farthing!" and three sharp knocks rang through the room. The devil walked in with his black horse and said "Tom, you’re come for" and rode off with Tom.
- Tom was never heard from or seen again. When searching his coffers all his bonds were found reduced to cinders. In place of gold and silver his iron chest was filled with chips and shavings; two skeletons replaced his horses and his house caught fire and was burned to the ground.
