- Lora Reveals the Project
- Hey Lora! I heard you got Mr. Morsel for social studies this year! I had him when I was a kid. Has he assigned you that project on how Iraq came to be? I can help you!
- Yes he did! I'm really excited to make the comic strip, but I'm not sure I know much about Iraq. Tell me about Iraq. I know you lived there for a few years.
- Dad explains Ancient Mesopotamia
- At around 5000 BCE, the area formerly known as Mesopotamia was established. It rests on what is now Kuwait and Iraq. After some time, this area went through being ruled by many people until finally settling down in 651 CE under the rule of Arabic Muslims.
- Dad explains World War One
- Things were going well until World War One, when the Allied powers defeated the Central powers, causing many countries to dissolve, including the Ottoman Empire and Mesopotamia. Under the San Remo agreement, the Ottoman Empire's remaining Arab providences were given to the League of Nations as mandates, or a place taken over and ruled by a seperate country/ organization.

- Wait a second! We talked about this is Mr. Morsel's class! Wasn't this when Britain and France chose to redraw borders for coutries without regard for ethnic or religious groups in those areas?

- I learned that Iraq used to be Mesopotamia and that it was formed when Britain unfairly partitioned the Arab provences, disrgarding the seperate ethnic and religous groups. I'll make sure to tell him. Got to go work on the project!
- So? Did you have fun? What did you learn? Tell Mr. Morsel I said hello!
- Yes! Since the British and French took many of the Arab provences from the Ottoman Empire, they made those places their colonies. The British took Mesopotamia and divided up many communities of people from the Kurdish ethnic group and placed them with people of other ethnic groups.
- The Muslims lived in the area of Mesopotamia for a long time and splint into two rival sects; the Sunni and Shi'a. Iraq came to be as a result of the British partitioning the Arab provences in the Mesopotamian reigon and puttng together many Sunnis and Shi'as caused violence in this spot. That is one of the main reasons that Southwest Asia does have some war/violence issues.
