  • "How is it that the clouds still hang on you?" Act 1 Scene 2 Line 66
  • "Thrift, thrift, Horatio. The funeral baked meats Did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables." Act 1 Scene 2 Line 181
  • King Claudius calls Hamlet, who has a better claim to the throne, his son. Hamlet takes this as more of a slight than a term of endearment.
  • "This heavy-headed revel east and west makes us traduced and taxed of other nations.They clepe us drunkards" Act 1 Scene 4 Line 19
  • Claudius mocks Hamlet's depression for the loss of his father. He asks him how it's even possible for him to be upset about it
  • "There’s never a villain dwelling in all Denmark, but he’s an arrant knave." Act 1 Scene 5 line 127
  • Hamlet expresses his distaste for the rapid transition from funeral to marriage. He's not trusting of Claudius or his mother
  • "So much as from occasion you may glean,Whether aught to us unknown afflicts him thus" Act 2 Scene 2 Line 16
  • Hamlet explains the merriness to Horatio, but also explains the implications. He dislikes how Claudius makes his country look worse with partying, drinking, and whoring
  • Hamlet is making a joke, saying that there is no villain that is not bad. He is obviously referring to Claudius, cementing is hatred.
  • Claudius enlists the help of Hamlet's old friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. He is showing his distrust for Hamlet and his need for spies
