- The Soviet Union launched the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, on October 4, 1957. This shocked the United States who rushed to rushed to outpace them, beginning the Space Race.
- WHAT!
- Less than a month later, on November 3, 1957, the Soviet space program successfully launched the Sputnik 2 carrying a dog named Laika who became the first living being to orbit the Earth. This was a major victory for the Soviets.
- In an effort to overtake the Soviet Union in the space race, the Unites States' Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) succesfully launched Explorer 1 on January 31, 1958.
- The Soviets attained their greatest triumph of the Space Race on April 12, 1961, when they launched the Vostok 1. The spacecraft took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome carrying Yuri Gagarin, who became the first human to travel into space. This victory allowed the USSR to again take a temporary lead in the Space Race.

- In response to the Soviets beating the United States with the first successful human spaceflight, the US launched Project Mercury. The Mercury-Redstone 3 was launched on May 5, 1961, carrying Alan Shepard. It didn’t enter Earth’s orbit, however, he was still the first American and second human to make a successful human spaceflight.
- Ultimate victory for the US was achieved with the Apollo 11 moon landing with Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. Recognising their defeat in the race to the moon, the Soviets cancelled their lunar program and launched the world's first space station called Salyut 1.
