In this part of the book, Richard is riding the bus with Sasha. One of Richard's friends dared Richard to set Sasha's skirt on fire while they were sleeping. Richard tried starting the lighter multiple times and it didn't work. He kept trying and his lighter finally lit and Sasha's skirt went up in flames. Richard hopped out of the bus and ran away, and the bus kept moving because the driver didn't notice Sasha was on fire.
This shows the part of the book where Sasha is in the hospital. They had really bad third-degree burns all over their legs from Richard. The doctors were very helpful and gave Sasha baths and made them feel a lot better. Sasha watched the news a lot in the hospital, and a lot of it was talking about them. Richard even sent them letters talking about how bad he felt that he had set their skirt on fire, and that he didn't know it would burn that fast.
During this part of the book, Richard was questioned by the police. He tells the police that he's not homophobic and that he just hates when gay people "overdo it". This experience makes him remember what being in juvie is like. He remembers all the rules there were and the different things you were allowed to do depending on if you were a kid or an adult.
