The ICJ handles: Border disputes, Human rights issues, Treaty disagreements, Genocide accusations, and Maritime boundaries.This court is important because it Promotes peaceful conflict resolution, Encourages countries to follow international law, Helps prevent war, Strengthens global cooperation. The ICJ proves that even countries have to answer to the law.
In Ukraine v. Russia the Countries involved are: Ukraine Russia. The issue is the allegations of misuse of the Genocide Convention. This matters because the case could affect international law and global peace.

Where it all Began
Created in 1945 after World War II. Official judicial branch of the United Nations. Replaced the older Permanent Court of International Justice. First cases began in 1946

15 judges total that are elected by the UN General Assembly and Security Council they all Serve 9-year terms. Judges come from different countries. Judges do NOT represent their countries. they must stay neutral.
Who are the judges?!
Only countries can bring cases. Both countries must agree to let the ICJ decide. Decisions are legally binding. If a country refuses to follow a ruling, the UN Security Council can get involved. The ICJ focuses on disputes between nations and gives legal opinions based on international law.
