World War II
World War I broke out in Europe in the summer of 1914. By August 1914, all the "great powers" of Europe had become involved in the conflict. Early in 1917, Germany announced unrestricted submarine warfare and began sinking American ships. In April 1917, President Woodrow Wilson finally asked congress for a declaration of war against Germany.
The Korean War
In 1939, Hitler attacked the neighboring country of Poland. World War II began in Europe. In 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. These events brought the US into the war on the sides of Britain and the Soviet Union.
Bay of Pigs Invasion
There was basically no fighting because it was more like a race to see who would get more countries to join their sphere of influence.
The Attacks Of September 11 and the War on Terror
IN 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to re-unite the country under communist rule. When Pres. Truman received news of the invasion, he immediately sent US troops to South Korea to resist the North Koreans.
In April 1961, only 4 months after Kennedy took office, 1400 Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs.
On 9/11/2001, Americans were shocked when commercial airplanes flew into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon Building. An Islamic Fundamentalist terrorist group was responsible. IN response to the attacks , Pres. Bush declared a global "War on Terror".
