Storyboard Text

  • Event #1: Attack on Fort McHenryOn September 13, 1814, the British attacked the port city of Baltimore. They bombarded Fort McHenry (which guarded the city's harbor) throughout the entire night. When dawn broke, an American lawyer named Francis Scott Key was overjoyed to see that the American flag still stood at the fort. This inspired him to write the poem "The Star Spangled Banner".
  • Event #2: Attack on Washington D.C.In August 1814, a British Army invaded Washington, D.C. They burned several public buildings, including the Capitol and the White House. President Madison barely escaped with his life, while his wife, Dolly Madison, managed to save the famous portrait of George Washington.
  • Find that James Madison and bring him to me!!!!
  • Yessssssssssssssir!!!!!!
  • Event #3: Battle of New OrleansOn January 8, 1815, the British unleashed an attack on New Orleans, a city well defended by General Andrew Jackson an army of 7,000 militia, free black slaves, Indians, and even pirates. Out of the 7,500 British soldiers, over 2,000 were killed or wounded, while there were only 20 American casualties. This was a totally unnecessary battle because two weeks earlier, American and British diplomats meeting at Ghent, Belgium, had signed a treaty ending the war. The news didn't reach New Orleans until after the battle was fought.
  • Hip hip hooray!!! Long live the mighty Andrew Jackson!!!!
  • We have won against the British!!!!
