- Background Info: After Borachio finds out Claudio seeks to marry Hero he reports to Don John and together they scheme to ruin their marriage.

- (Act 1, Scene 3, lines 50-53) "Come, come, let us thither. This may prove food to my displeasure. That young start-up hath all the glory of my overthrow. If I can cross him any way, I bless myself every way. You are both sure, and will assist me?
- (Act 1, Scene 3, line 58) ‘We’re all yours’
- Theme Analysis:The underlying theme throughout this scene is the power of pride. Don John is mad that if Claudio woos Hero his status will be even higher than his and so his pride pushes him to act selfishly and attempt to ruin Claudio's love. Don John's tone in this scene is very angry and distressed while the mood is quite suspenseful as he is plotting something evil.
- (Act 1, Scene 3, lines 10-14) 'I can’t conceal what I am, so I’ll just do as I like: I’ll be sad when I have reason, and not laugh at anyone’s jokes: eat when I’m hungry, and not wait for anyone else: sleep when I’m tired, and not mind anyone else’s business: laugh when I’m merry, and not scratch anyone’s back to keep in with him.’
- Scene Analysis:There wouldn't be a play and a plot to drive forward without this scene. This scene, inside Don John's home, sets up the whole play for the entire Claudio and Hero plotline. It also moves the theme of deception and trickery forward later on in the play when they deceive Claudio into believing Hero cheated on him.
