- Sublimation is the act of satisfying aggressive impulses into socially acceptable behavior. In this example, the wrestling athletes are wrestling to satisfy their urge of agressiveness
- DENIAL
- Denial is the refusal to accept real events because of their unpleasantness. In this example, the man dressed in the black shirt cannot comprehend the fact that his girlfriend cheated on him and refuses to acknowledge that is the truth

- REACTION FORMATION
- I apologize for being late to the meeting
- Reaction formation is when one act in the opposite way of one's socially unacceptable impulses. In this example, the man is very angry at his coworker for being late, but he responses by treating her nicely
- No worries, come, the boss brought us cupcakes!
- If you do that one more time I will fire you!
- Displacement is the transfer of aggresive urges to a less threatening target. For example, the girl is very angry at her friend for being irresponsible at a class project, but to avoid getting into trouble at class, she comes home and takes the anger onto her mother.
- DISPLACEMENT
- Honey, how was school today?
- Leave me alone!
- Anna is so not responsible!
- Repression is the banishment of arousing impulses into the unconscious. For example, the car crash's victim's experience was so traumatic that his brain banished the thought into the unconscious so he cannot remember
