You see, there was a German man called Martin Luther, who despised the ways of the Catholic Church and thought that they were greedy! Instead of teaching the way of God, they wanted money!
Money!! Or else...
Well, Luther created some rules, a bit like the ten commandments, for people to live by in order to get to get to Heaven, called the 95 Theses based around 1 specific rule, justification by faith ALONE.

And so people began to believe Luther and his ways of how to get to Heaven, and the the Catholic Church were depicted as the antichrist. Fortunately for them, The Council of Trent, which was an assembly held by the leaders of the Catholic Church, saved them from decreasing in population and followers all together!1 Another honourable mention is Calvin, who created his own religion based off Luther's beliefs and was popular in the 16 century, Calvinism.
