  • The riot at the Long Binh Jail is the most publicized of thousands of racial incidents reported in South Vietnam between 1968 and 1971. On Nov. 23, 1968, The Philadelphia Tribune wrote of large-scale battles between black and white soldiers in service clubs in Da Nang and Long Binh.
  • After War Experience
  • ...African Americans made up twenty-five percent of the U.S. soldiers killed in Vietnam during 1965 and 1966…African American soldiers intentionally segregated themselves from the rest of their unit...some white soldiers in base camps made racist comments or displayed racially insensitive symbols, like the Confederate flag [and] in some cases, racial tensions exploded into violence. Such incidents contributed to the overall decline in the performance of American troops in Vietnam.
  • African Americans being in the war helped promote other black men join the military, it helped bring awareness to the Africans who fought and received no recognition, and it helped the Civil Rights Movement. Some black sergeants received medals for severing. However, it was still hard for all soldiers and due to discrimination, the black's soldiers had a hard time getting back to normal.
  • “While many people who are thrown into combat experience mental health problems, the Vietnam veterans experienced more than usual. Out of the 1.6 million who fought in Vietnam, nearly 750,000 of the became homeless, while even more committed suicide. According to Illinois University, more Vietnam veterans committed suicide after the war than had died in it. In the Vietnam war, there were more than 58,000 deaths and more than 300,000 wounded as well as more than 700,000 veterans who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.”
