  • Congo's Sudden Independence
  • Well let's JUMP straightinto it!
  • Congo's Sudden Independence
  • Congo suddenly won independence in 1960, however, no one was educated enough to be a ruler, thus resulting in much political instability and poverty.
  • Lack of Education
  • Congo struggled to self-rule for one major reason. No one was educated. In 1908, the Belgian government took over Congo. However, because of the fact it was only looked at as a source of wealth, no Congolese were able to go to Europe to learn. The most knowledgeable could not be in a law or medicine school whatsoever. In 1960 when they gained independence, this really showed. Prince Lumumba won to become the leader, but had no experience whatsoever, and was eventually overthrown and murdered. After this, there was a civil war for four years, until 1965. Someone then took power by the name of General Joseph Desire Mobutu and ruled for three decades and changed the name of Congo to Zaire. However, the way General Mobutu ruled was very self-serving and wasted many, many resources of Congo leaving it dry, until one day he was taken over by rebel forces and the name changed again to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • I've been TOAD that in 1960, there was a 60% illiteracy rate in Congo.
  • What Could of Been Done Differently
  • I just eat whatever BUGS me, so I have no issues.
  • To prevent instability I believe that the government should of picked someone instead of it being an election. This is because of the reason that their independence is new and there are not many educated people in Congo whatsoever. The reason why the people picked Patrice Lumumba was because of how his speech was fiery and strong, it spoke of anticolonialism and this attracted many people. However, this should not be the only reason to pick someone and as the people should have their choice in the matter of who gets to be president, a different approach could be the government choosing a select few to build up a solid foundation first before anything.
  • Congo Today
  • Congo struggled from the lack of education and experience they needed to sufficiently rule. However, even now, they still have problems, being politically, as well as a lack of resources. From the former General Mobutu's tyranny, there are few resources left in Congo. This leads to poverty, not necessarily in money but definitely in resources, even basic ones. According to bdex (https://bdex.eb.mil.br/jspui/bitstream/1/949/1/CIEE_ADETOBA_CHHONKAR_TOSETTO.pdf) it states, "...including conflicts over basic resources such as water, access and control over rich minerals and other resources as well as various political agendas. The main remote causes are colonialism and the failure of democratic transition in the former Zaire." "From the time of Belgian colonial rule, the inhabitants of the region have suffered an unbroken succession of abusive political administrations, military authorities and armed political groups that have looted the region and committed human rights abuses with impunity. " (Pg. 9 ADEWALE COLLINS ADETOBA) This all tells us that the broken leadership and difficulty in transitioning to independence, it led to a lack fo resources overall even today.
