The Quest
The quest includes a long, dangerous journey or mission. Hrothgar, the king, is telling Beowulf about his mission before battling Grendel's mother, offering him another chance at being a hero and journeying.
Vast landscapes include descriptions of mysterious descriptions and vivid imagery. The lake scene before Beowulf battles Grendel's mother is a perfect example.
At night that lake burns like a torch. No one knows its bottom, no wisdom reaches such depths (431, 433).

As his words ended he leaped into the lake, would not wait for anyone's answer; the heaving water covered him over (467-470).

Serious tone includes long speeches. In this scene, Beowulf tells Wiglaf to lead his people and colloborate with the Geats to build him a tomb and burn him, showing his heriosm.
