In this scene, the intensity of the story builds up as Scoot taps on the door. This is the rising action because the doors are too thick to communicate with one another, which creates suspense. For example, when Sully gives Scoot directions to get out, "She did not respond."(11) This moves the events of the plot forward because Scoot may not be able to escape in time.
In this scene, the tension has reached its highest point when Scoot escapes. When she escapes, this is the climax because this is the point when the conflict has been resolved. For example, "Treading water beside the hull, she sucked in fresh air and finally called out, 'Sully..."(14) Scoot escaping moves the events of the plot forward because this leads to the falling action when everything begins to wrap up.
The falling action begins when the two siblings are waiting to be rescued. This is the falling action because after Scoot finally escapes, the intensity begins to die down. For example, they sat on the flipped boat, "...holding each other for warmth all night, they rode and rocked, knowing that the boat was sinking lower each hour."(14) This moves the events of the plot forward because although the boat is sinking, the suspense has gone down and this leads to the resolution.
