I'm sorry Bijaya, but we lost your certificate. I'm afraid you must redo the 5th grade.
What?! But that messes up so much!
When my father was in the 5th grade, his certificate of graduation was lost before he could receive it. This made my father very upset, as he was trying to get as far ahead as he could, and had already skipped a grade and was planning on skipping another. Having to redo a year would be a massive hinderance to his goals and plans.

What should I do about the situation father?
Your education is in your hands, and you must personally take action.
My grandfather had a very hands off approach to my fathers education, and would leave many important decisions to him. This pushed my father to take action himself to try and resolve his issue.

I know what I should do!
My father got the idea to go and talk to the district superintendent to try and get his certificate of graduation, and talked to his parents about it.

This is going to take a while...
At the time, since my fathers home was in the hills he had to walk a long way to the district superintendents office. He had to walk for about 2 hours there, and about the same when he returned.

You must help me!
And why should I do that?
Initially, the superintendent was skeptical of my father's story, and didn't want to help him.
Skluzavka: 6
Young Man I am very impressed that you came all this way by yourself. I admire your dedication, and I will definitely help you!
Thank you so much!
However, my dad eventually convinced him to put in a good word for him. Though the superintendent was initially suspicious, as my dad explained his situation further, the superintendent was impressed with his initiative. The superintendent allowed my father to graduate without a certificate, and this experience taught my father a lot about being straightforward and taking action for himself.

New school, no problem! I'll make some friends quickly and study hard!
My dad had to move schools often, as his father's work required him to move around different cities. Initially, my dad struggled with changing schools often, but overtime learned to adapt and make friends quickly. This allowed my father to build valuable relationship skills at an early age.

This isn't the life I want when I grow up. I can't be stuck here forever!
Since he was a young boy, my father always wanted to be a doctor, and leave the village. As he grew up, he saw a lot of people he knew become stuck in the village farming or doing other things to make a living due to slacking off. This gave him a sense of urgency, and this combined with his dream of becoming a doctor caused my father to develop a very strict work ethic.

After going to college in Nepal, my father decided to study abroad in South Korea. He left Nepal by himself with just one suitcase.

Nice to meet you Bijaya!
Nice to meet you guys as well!
He quickly met two people who went to the same university as him, and would become good friends with them. He would spend the most time with them in the years he spent in Korea.

There's this one Korean BBQ place I want to go to.
What do y'all want to do now?
Sounds great!
When he wasn't studying, my father would regularly go out with his friends, and immersed himself in Korean culture. He tried foods he hadn't before, and would go to places like bars and shopping malls. He had fun experiencing new things and spending time with his new friends.

No problem man, anytime!
Thank you guys a ton for helping me learn Korean!
My father would practice Korean regularly with his friends, as he wasn't very good at the language. However, through the efforts of him and his friends he would eventually be able to speak basic Korean, which helped him a ton in day to day interactions.
Skluzavka: 13
Your Korean has gotten much better! You're improving a ton!
And my grades have also gotten better, I wonder why...
My father did very well in his studies, as he had good study strategies. Additionally, he and his friends would help each other review for exams. However, my father found that what helped when it came to retaining and memorizing information was not just all the studying he did, it was also the skills he learned while trying to learn Korean as fast as he could.

OMG, what is happening!
During his time in Korea, my father saw the 9/11 attacks on television. He personally saw a plane hit the second tower, and it shocked him very deeply. He had heard of acts of terrorism back in Nepal, but had never seen anything of this scale. It gave him paranoia about flying, and even affected his grades.

After studying for three years in Korea, my father returned to Nepal, where he would get engaged with my mother. They decided to move to the United States in 2004 to pursue higher education. They got married shortly after in the US.

We have a child on the way and money has been tight, what can we do?
As long as we carefully budget the money we get from the university, we should be fine.
Everything was going smoothly, until the 2008 recession happened. At this time, my mother was pregnant with me, and money was tight. Neither of them worked, so their only income was the allowance the university gave them. However, with lots of budgeting my parents managed to get through it. Though it was tough, my father never regretted having me during this time.

Is there anything you would tell your younger self?
I would tell him to never be afraid of asking others for help and doing what's best for himself. I would also remind him to keep working hard and to never give up on his dreams!
Eventually, in October of 2014, my father would finally complete his PhD in microbiology, and received his diploma at the University of Utah. It was very surreal for him, as decades of hard work and effort led up to this moment.
