  • The scene of Doodle's death was full of despair for the narrarator and caused him and his family great pain.
  • Style
  • "The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted through every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead". The author uses these words to show the dreariness of the story and to set the mood.
  • Theme
  • "He was born when I was six and was from the outset, a dissapointment." The author describes Doodle as a dissapointment to create an early opinion of him.
  • "So I dragged him across the burning cotton field to share with him the only beauty I knew, Old Woman Swamp." The author introduces this scene by describing with emotion what is happening with the narrarator and Doodle
  • The Scarelet Ibis died and Doodle was upset by this which served as a sort of foreshadowing of the near future for Doodle.
