-  As Maxie leaves school Sam tells Maxie, "'This is for you," I said, holding out the paper bag. "yeah?" she said. "For me?" She stood there looking at me, looking at the bag. I shifted my feet. "Yeah. Thought they were--nice. I mean, I knew you didn't have-- I thought you'd like them'" (Magoon 51).
- Chapter 12 "Saving Stick"
- Sam is fighting the anger then he," surrendered to the wave, to the fire. I picked up a brick from the sidewalk and flung it through the store window, then I rushed at the building" ( Magoon 97).

- Sam and Father driving and Father ask Sam,"' What do you have there? " He asked, pointing to the papers in my hands. I pulled the Panther information closer to my chest. "Homework." Father regarded me out of the corner of his eye. :And you have it with you?" "Maxie needed some help with math, so I came and showed her." Why did I have to lie? The shards already loose in me dug deeper"( 131). 
- Sam points the gun at the man choking Stick then, "The man looked at Father, then back at me. He slowly withdrew his arm from around Stick's neck and stepped back. He melted into the crowd. Stick stumbled. He cam toward me, one hand on his neck, the other outstretch. 'Give me the gun, Sam.' He lifted it from my finger. I was glad to let it go" (Magoon 188-189).

- As Sam was grieving over the death Of Stick Sam" thought back to Raheem's whispered vow, to find the cop who'd taken Stick from me, from the world. I breathed easier then. There was one other thing I could make happen. One other thing that might balance what had happened. I took  a roll of dark tape from the hall closet and patched the hole in Stick's jacket with a wide X. Then I slipped it on. The shoulders drooped onto my arms a bit, and the sleeves hung past my wrists, but it felt nice" Magoon 263).
