Angry Soldiers and Colonists
we are warning you back off now
The colonists' relationship with the military deteriorated. Boston was one place where tensions were very high. By making fun of their red coats the colonists demonstrated their hatred of the military. They gave them monikers such as lobsterback. Troops made a special effort to annoy the locals.
What happened next
The animosity in Boston spilled into bloodshed on March 5, 1770. A soldier stood watch in front of the Customs building on this extremely chilly night. Before nine o'clock, a group of people started to assemble. The soldier was called names by members of the mob. A few of them hurled stones and snowballs.
Captain Thomas Preston hastened to the guard's side with seven other troops. They loaded their muskets and faced the enraged mob. The soldiers were teased by the crowd. More ice chunks and snowballs were flung.
The men were ordered not to fire their weapons by Captain Thomas Preston. However, one soldier claimed to have fired his weapon into the crowd after hearing the order to Fire! The soldiers opened fire in a panic as the throng advanced on them. After a short while, six people were dead..
